October 31, 2011 – Bolivar:  Halloween night, district playoffs, Marshfield against Bolivar, take 4.  Trick or Treat? For the fourth year in a row, Bolivar ended Marshfield's season in the district playoffs.  The game started off in a rough fashion as Josh Condren came out on top during a mad scramble in front of the Jays goal to give Bolivar a 1-0 lead in the 6th minute.  In the 20th minute, it looked promising as Taylor Presson shot toward the goal; the ball was deflected by the keeper toward Koty Jones, whose shot was cleared by the defense.  In the 22nd minute, Andrew McClard got behind the Marshfield defense to double the score.  The Jays had their best chance to score in the 39th minute, as Koty Jones passed the ball to Taylor Presson right in front of the goal, but his shot was just wide.

In the 49th minute, Josh Condren scored his second goal of the night to give Bolivar a 3-0 lead.  In the 62nd minute, Josh Condren completed his hat trick and the scoring for the night, 4-0 Bolivar.

Marshfield Keeper Nic Yonter had 21 saves on the night, giving him a record-setting 391 on the season.  Nic Yonter also finishes his high school career with 1,162 career saves, which puts him at SECOND PLACE all-time in the NATION for career saves, only 23 away from first place.

Next District Game Against Bolivar – Fourth Year in a Row

October 29, 2011 – Bolivar:  The Marshfield Blue Jays arrived at their home away from home – sort of like an Aunt's house?? – as they took the field in Bolivar for the fifth time this year.  The Jays found a Hillcrest team that was ready to play.  In the 7th minute, Ngozi Gregory started a busy day for goals by scoring the first one for the Hornets.  In the 18th minute, the Jays answered as Taylor Presson went on a nice run and passed the ball across the goal to a waiting Sean McCorkle.  In the 21st minute, Christian Harden gave Marshfield the lead as his smash into the upper 90 found the back of the net, 2-1 Jays.  In the 24th minute, a header by Shane Shingleton hit off of the crossbar. In the 25th minute, a tap in by Shane Shingleton in front of the net went over the crossbar.

In the 46th minute, a needless foul in the box gave Hillcrest a penalty kick that was converted by Ngozi Gregory to knot the score once again.  In the 55th minute, a nice pass from Taylor Presson to Koty Jones gave the Jays the lead at 3-2.  In the 66th minute, a unlucky shot tied the score at 3.  In the 67th minute, a cross from Robert Norton to a sliding Harrison Jones was just wide.  In the 72nd minute, a nice run by Harrison Jones resulted in a shot that was saved by the keeper.  In the 77th minute, a free kick from 40 yards by Nicholas Harden went to Taylor Presson inside the box, who passed it to a waiting Koty Jones to give Marshfield a lead they would not relinquish.   Taylor Presson completes the second "assist hat trick" in school history.  Keeper Nic Yonter had 10 saves on the day.  The final score was Marshfield – 4, Hillcrest 3.

Because of the win, the Jays continue their season into the semi-finals of the District Tournament against Bolivar.  This will be the fourth year in a row these two teams have met in the District Tournament, and the third time in Bolivar during this time period.  The game will be Monday, October 31st at 4:00 p.m.

October 24, 2011 – Lebanon:  The last regular season game for the Jays was played mostly between the 18's in the first half.  In the 23rd minute, the ball was bouncing around like a pinball in front of the Lebanon net as Harrison Jones' shot hit off of the post and was cleared away.  In the 33rd minute, Lebanon's Trent Johnson got behind the Jays' defense to put the home team up by a goal.  With just seconds remaining in the half, Harrison Jones thought his header would be the equalizer, but it once again hit off of the post.

The missed chances continued for Marshfield in the second half.  In the 42nd minute, a cross by Robert Norton to Taylor Presson was headed, but right at the keeper.  In the 43rd minute, Christian Harden had a rocket shot that was tipped away by the keeper for a corner.  In the 44th minute, Trent Johnson caught the Jays defense napping to double the score.  In the 56th minute, Christian Harden had a nice run that ended in a shot that was just wide.  In the 57th minute, Trent Johnson completed his hat rick for a 3 goal Lebanon lead.  In the 65th minute, a hard shot by Sean McCorkle off the keeper was finished into the net by Culyer Obermaier to make the score 1-3.  In the 78th minute, Taylor Presson sent  a loose ball in the box toward the goal, but the ball hit the crossbar.  The final score was Lebanon – 3, Marshfield -1.

Our next game is in Districts on Saturday, October 29th at 1:00 p.m. against Hillcrest.

October 20, 2011 – Springfield:  Always hard to resist this headline when the Marshfield Blue Jays and Greenwood Blue Jays play.  On a very chilly night at a very nice turf field at Cooper 1, the play was rather sluggish for both teams early on.  In the 20th minute, Greenwood got behind the defense to open up the scoring.  One minute later, Jack Hogan from Greenwood doubled their money.  In the 26th minute, Robert Norton sent a cross into Sean McCorkle, whose shot was slightly high.  In the 28th minute, Harrison Jones' shot was saved.  In the 30th minute, Sean McCorkle had a cross that was cleared by the defense.  In the 34th minute, a deflection in the box went right to Greenwood for a 3 goal lead.

In the 44th minute, a nice cross by Taylor Presson was cleared away by the defense.  In the 45th minute, a shot by John Fenwick from Greenwood was deflected by a Marshfield defender into the goal to make it 0-4.  In the 48th minute, Harrison Jones had a shot that was saved by the keeper.  In the 52nd minute, Harrison Jones had a nice run that ended in a shot that was wide.  In the 54th minute, a free kick taken by Joseph Huber was sent into the box, but cleared by the defense.  In the 56th minute, a shot by Taylor Presson was sent wide.  In the 61st minute, a cross by Harrison Jones was sent into the box, but cleared away by the defense.  In the 62nd minute, a shot from the edge of the 18 by Taylor Presson was knocked away by the keeper.  In the 75th minute, a rocket off of foot of Calvin Harriman was just wide of the goal.  There would be no further scoring this game.

The J.V. score was 1-3 with Cole Wiggington scoring for the Jays.

Freeze Frame

October 17, 2011 – Marshfield:  Little did we all know that our Jays were a cold-weather team.  With the mercury dropping, the wind howling and the fans huddled together with quilts, coats and furry animal friends to keep warm, the Jays gave one of their best performances on Senior Night.  Marshfield actually kept the possession advantage on their side throughout the game.  In the 2nd minute, a free kick taken by Joseph Huber from 20 yards out was headed just wide by Harrison Jones.  In the 5th minute, the fans were ready to cheer as a rocket from Robert Norton looked like it was on frame, but hit off of the corner bar.  In the 9th minute, a nice run by Christian Harden ended in a shot that was just wide.  In the 24th minute, a free kick taken by Taylor Presson from 22 yards out was not on frame.  In the 27th minute, a run by Josh Bell resulted in a shot that was slightly off frame. In the 34th minute, another famous Blue Jay mad scramble in front of the goal came up empty.  In the 37th minute, a great run by Calvin Harriman resulted in a foul inside the box … but alas, no whistle.  The first half ended without a score from either team.

In the 42nd minute, a cross from Robert Norton to Shane Shingleton was headed on frame, but saved by the keeper.  In the 45th minute, another mad scramble did not result in a goal.  In the 54th minute, the third of four mad scrambles produced only empty hopes.  In the 57th minute, a cross from Robert Norton to Cuyler Obermaier looked promising, but was cleared away by the defense,  In the next minute, a cross from Cuyler Obermaier to Harrison Jones was sent on frame, but saved by the keeper.  In the 59th minute, a smash by Harrison Jones found the back of the net for a 1-0 Marshfield lead.  There was mostly quiet until the 80th minute when a cross by the Bulldogs found two unmarked men for a tap in to send the game into overtime as the whistle was sounding.

As the Jays 6th overtime of the year started, the excitement from the crowd was blowing over the field like the cold wind.  The best chance for the Jays was their last mad scramble in front of the goal in the 83rd minute, but there was no shot on frame.  The second overtime was highlighted by 2 great saves to allow the Jays to go into penalty kicks for the 4th time this year.  Keeper Nic Yonter ended the game with 17 saves.  The penalty kicks ended with Central on top by 3 to 2, making the final official score: Central – 2, Marshfield – 1.

As is always the case with the last home game of the year, the seniors on the team were honored:  Joseph Huber, Taylor Presson, and Nic Yonter.  Their leadership, effort and enthusiasm will be missed.  Thank you for your commitment and dedication to the team, school and community.  May great success and joy follow you all of your days!  Great men you have become; now go forth and help impact the world!

The J.V. fared rather well.  Their game was shortened to only one half.  The J.V. came out on top 1-0, with Cuyler Obermaier scoring the only goal of the game in its first minute.

Our next game is Thursday, October 22nd at 4:30 p.m. against Greenwood at Cooper 1 in Springfield.

Monett Cubs Still Useful in October

Posted October 16th, 2011 by
Categories: HS Boys

October 13, 2011 – Marshfield: St. Louis Cardinal fans know that the "Cubs" in Chicago Cubs stands for "Completely Useless By September."  As far as the Monett Cubs go, that was certainly not the case this October night.  The game was hotly contested throughout.  In the 7th minute, a corner taken by Joseph Huber was headed by Taylor Presson, but cleared away by the defense.  In the 8th minute, a free kick from 30 yards out by Nicholas Harden was sent into the box, but cleared away.  In the 12th minute, Taylor Presson had a rocket that was just wide.  In the 32nd minute, after  a nice run by Calvin Harriman, he crossed the ball into the box only to have the defense collapse on the ball.  In the 35th minute, a free kick by Nicholas Harden was sent into the box where Robert Norton's header was inches too high.

In the second half, the play became much rougher.  Unfortunately, the whistles and calls did not mirror the play on the field.  A cross by Sean McCorkle was tipped away by the keeper.  In the 42nd minute, a free kick taken by Joseph Huber just outside the box was cleared away by the defense.  In the 48th minute, another nice cross by Sean McCorkle was cleared by the defense.  In the 49th minute, a smash by Harrison Jones was caught by the keeper.  In the 55th minute, Robert Norton sent in a shot that was barely tipped away off the keeper's hands for a corner.  The corner was taken by Joseph Huber, but cleared out by the defense.  In the 56th minute, a fantastic-looking shot by Taylor Presson beat the keeper but was only inches wide. In the 58th minute, a free kick by Nicholas Harden caused a mad scramble in the box that came up empty.  In the 61st minute, a free kick by Joseph Huber was sent into the box but cleared away.  In the 63rd minute, a corner taken by Monett was cleared but unfortunately went right to an unmarked Cub who found the back of the net for a 1 goal Monett lead.  In the 70th minute, a clear foul in the box by Monett was not called and resulted in a second goal for the Cubs.  Keeper Nic Yonter ended the night with 13 saves.  The final score:  Monett – 2, Marshfield – 0.

The J.V. played to a hard fought 1-3 score, with Cole WIggington netting the goal for the Jays.

Our next game is Monday, October 17th at 5:00 p.m. at HOME.  This is also Senior Night.

October 11, 2011 – Rogersville:  When a team on a rampage faces a team that is not quite firing properly on all its cylinders – in a rivalry game – the final result is normally predictable.  The game was not without some offensive chances for the Jays, however.  In the 1st minute, Taylor Presson had a blast on goal that was saved by the keeper.  In the 3rd minute, the Jays were not able to take advantage of a deep throw in.  In the 7th minute, a cross from Sean McCorkle to Taylor Presson in the box was headed, but cleared by the defense.  In the 8th minute, a deep throw in by Robert Norton was cleared away.  In the 9th minute, Taylor Presson took a shot that was cleared away.  In the 10th minute, an absolute rocket from Robert Norton looked like a goal, but was inches away from pay dirt.  In the 16th minute, a free kick by Christian Harden from midfield was sent into the box, but cleared away by the defense.   In the 18th minute, a header in the box from Harrison Jones was sent slightly over the crossbar.  In the 20th minute, the Wildcats got behind the Marshfield defense for a 1 goal lead.  8 minutes later, Rogersville added a second goal.  In the 35th minute, the 'Cats added a 3rd goal to close out the scoring for the half.

In the 1st minute of the second half, the Wildcats added to their total to make it a 4 goal differential.  In the 42nd minute, a shot by Harrison Jones was saved by the keeper.  In the next minute, Rogersville added another goal.  In the 53rd minute, a break away from Harrison Jones looked promising, but was knocked away by the keeper for a corner.  The corner was taken by Joseph Huber and headed just wide by Harrison Jones.  In the 55th minute, an illegal touching about 2 yards into the box by the Rogersville keeper on a pass back from his teammate seemed to be the break the Jays needed.  Unfortunately, this opportunity fell flat.  In the 67th minute, the Wildcats added their 6th goal of the night.  In the 72nd minute, a fantastic through ball from Robert Norton to Calvin Harriman was smashed toward the goal, but knocked away.  In the 73rd minute, a pass from Calvin Harriman to Cuyler Obermaier was sent just high. There would be no more scoring in this game.  Keeper Nic Yonter had 13 saves.  Final score, Rogersville – 6, Marshfield – 0.

The J.V. played a darkness-shorted game, losing only 1-0.

Our next game is Thursday, October 13th at HOME against Monett.

October 6, 2011 – Marshfield:  A good night's rest and no game seemed to help the Jays bring back some pep to their game this night.  In just the 2nd minute, an obvious offside call was missed by the officiating crew, allowing Branson to take an early lead.  In the 3rd minute, a long range shot by Harrison Jones was sent just wide.  In the 5th minute, a corner kick taken by Joseph Huber was cleared by the defense.  In the 12th minute, a free kick by Christian Harden was taken from midfield and sent to Joseph Huber, whose shot was wide.  In the 17th minute, a shot from Shane Shingleton was saved by the keeper.  In the 19th minute, a deep throw in from Nicholas Harden to Harrison Jones was headed toward the goal, but saved by the keeper.  In the 22nd minute, a free kick by Koty Jones was sent into the box, but cleared away by the defense.  In the 28th minute, a smash from the side by Sean McCorkle was barely tipped away by the keeper for a corner.  In the 33rd minute, the Pirates got behind the Jays' defense to double their lead to 2-0.  In the 36th minute, a rocket off the foot of Harrison Jones was just slightly too high.

The Jays contiued their offensive pressure in the second half.  In the 42nd minute, a free kick from Nicholas Harden from midfield nearly found a friendly person by the backpost, but was slightly too long.  In the 47th minute, a free kick from 25 yards out by Joseph Huber was deflected by the keeper.  In the 52nd minute, a nice run by Hunter Heape was collapsed on by the defense.  In the 57th minute, a long run by Calvin Harriman was stopped by the defense.  In the 58th minute, a long range shot by Christian Harden was slightly high.  In the 61st minute, a deep throw in from Harrison Jones to Taylor Presson looked promising, but was cleared away by the Pirate defense.  In the 62 nd minute, a free kick by Nicholas Harden at midfield went into the box, but was cleared away.  In the 63rd minute, a deep throw in by Christian Harden to Taylor Presson was again stopped by the defense.  In the 66th minute, a mad scramble in front of the goal with Calvin Harriman, Cuyler Obermaier and Sean McCorkle having chances came up empty.  In the next 4 minutes, Calvin Harriman had 3 very nice runs that were all collapsed on by the defense.  In the 74th minute, a smash by Shane Shingleton was saved by the keeper.  In the 78th minute, a free kick by Joseph Huber right outside the 18 was sent into the back of the net to cut the lead to 1-2.  The game ended without any further scoring.  Keeper Nic Yonter had 14 saves.  Final score, Branson -2, Marshfield – 1.

The J.V. game ended with the Pirates on top by a score of 7-0.

Our next game is Tuesday, October 11th at 4:30 p.m. in Rogersville.  Varsity plays first due to the lack of lights at the stadium.
