Home Opener v. Catholic

Tuesday, September 8th, 2009

Jays Players of the Game: Robert Martin, Kyle Cary, Evan Barth, Colton Harden.

MARSHFIELD – Marshfield toughed it out against Catholic, the State’s third place finisher in class 1 last year. The pace was very fast from the first kick of the game. Catholic ended up on top at the end of the first half, 4-0. Goals were scored by Nick Kofron, Taylor Arens (Luke Straus), Luke Straus (Josh Moncada) and Justin Bowenschulte (Austin Lewis).

The Jays had several good scoring chances that were just not successful in the end. With 14 minutes left in the half, Koty Jones’ corner ball was unable to find an open Marshfield player. Koty’s free kick sailed just high later in the half.

In the first half, Robert Martin had a breakaway that was not successful, and had an excellent header in the second half that did not find the back of the net. All in all, Robert Martin had several excellent counterattacks and worked the ball well on the Catholic end of the field. Colton Harden was able to dribble several Irish while being triple-teamed throughout most of the game, and had a strong free kick that was slightly high. Backup keeper Cory Day showed aggression in several breakaway situations and tough shots. The defense led by Kyle Cary and Evan Barth, were able to block shots and clear out several dangerous balls throughout the game. The second half ended with 3:44 left in regulation time as Catholic scored their 10th goal. The Irish’s second half goals were scored by Adam Entrup (David Bailey), David Bailey (Taylor Arens), Nick Kofron (second goal on the day) (David Bailey), Carson Shaefer (Mitchell Moncada), Evan Craig (Carson Shaefer) and Reid Harbach (Carson Shaefer).

Considering the additional facts that the Jays had three starters hit by the injury bug and one by the blah bug, the boys were very courageous. Our next game is this Thursday, September 10 at 4:30 p.m. in Aurora.

Marshfield Season Opener @ Ozark

Tuesday, September 1st, 2009

OZARK – Jays players of the game – Keeper Nic Yonter and Defender Jacob Twaddle.

The Marshfield Blue Jays started the 2009 soccer season on the road against Ozark. Almost from the beginning of the game, the Ozark Tigers came out firing. The ball stayed near the Jays goal most of the entire half. After a barrage of shots were either deflected or cleared by Jays defender Jacob Twaddle, and several circus saves by Keeper Nic Yonter, the Tigers drew first blood at the 12 minute mark of the first half with a goal by Landon Hunter. With 28 minutes gone in the game, Zach Moore of Ozark scored their second goal. The half ended with Marshfield 2-0. Goalkeeper Nic Yonter had 15 saves by halftime.

The second half was more of the same with numerous shots being fired toward the goal. Seth Hampton of the Tigers was finally able to score at the midway point of the second half to make the score 3-0. Somewhere during stoppage time, Ozark’s Jacob Merrit ended the scoring to make the final 4-0.

Keeper Nic Yonter, in what some are calling a potential all-state performance, ended the game with an unbelievable 33 saves – jumping, diving, sliding, flying all over the goal – doing his best impression of his hero, Brazilian/Inter Milan keeper Julio Cesar.

Although the score did not end favorably for the Blue Jays, they showed courage and determination hanging in the game, especially the defensive unit. With everyone’s first game jitters out of the way, we can look forward to a great season ahead. Our next game is Tuesday, September 8, at 4:30 p.m. at HOME against Springfield Catholic.
