Jays Cage Cubs to Advance to Semis

MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield Blue Jays played the Monett Cubs in a hotly contested quarterfinal district contest today. The first half was played mostly between the 18′s, with just a few interruptions for offensive opportunities. Most of the Monett chances were cleared by the Jays’ defense of Jacob Twaddle, Kyle Cary, and Koty Jones. In the 25th minute, Colton Harden had a great opportunity from the side that was saved. In the 27th minute, Robert Martin had a shot that just wide. The 29th minute brought on a bit of excitement as a cross from Colton Harden to Robert Martin went slightly too far. In the 37th minute, Robert Martin had a shot that was just wide left. In the 39th minute, Cory Day had a nice chance that sailed just a bit high. The half ended with a scoreless tie.

The first 14 minutes of the second half continued to be played in the mid-field area. Then, in the 54th minute, the home crowd got their wishes as a wonderful pass from Ryan Doolittle to Robert Martin was smashed into the onion bag for a 1-0 Marshfield lead! The 57th minute showed some promise as a rocket off the foot of Colton Harden was saved for a corner. The 67th minute brought the crowd to their feet again as a shot from Robert Martin went right to Ryan Doolittle for a 2 goal lead. Just 2 minutes later, a fabulous cross by Colton Harden to the far post found Joseph Huber, who finished beautifully for a 3-0 Jays’ lead as well as his first varsity goal. Way to go Joseph!! This was also the final score: 3-0 Jays. Marshfield Keeper Nic Yonter had 17 saves and the only clean sheet for the quarterfinal round.

This was the best all-around game for the Marshfield Blue Jays this year. We really played as a team: offense, defense, midfield. Great job, guys. Let’s keep it going as we play in the semifinals against Cassville, on Monday, November 2nd at 6:30 p.m. at HOME.
